Recently I needed to create a coaster for one of my personal projects. Above is a version of the final result. I will walk you through the steps I took to get this great effect.
We will start by creating a document that is 500×500 pixels. Create a new layer and name it coaster. Set the foreground color to #e5e1bc and drag out a circle in the center of the document.

Now select your background color and set it to #d2cea7. Go to the filter/noise/add noise and use these settings.

Ctrl click the coaster to select it. Now click the select menu and select modify/contract. Set it to contract by five pixels and click ok. Next create a new layer and fill it with #231f20. Go back to the select menu and select modify/contract again and use the same setting of 5px. Now press backspace to remove the center. The result should look something like this.

Next I want to add the design for the coaster. I created the radioactive symbol in Illustrator and pasted it into my document as a smart object. You can create whatever graphic you want to place in the center of yours. Or you can download my symbol here. Name this new layer active and center it in the coaster. You should have something like the image below at this point.

Create a new layer and name it name, and set your foreground color to #e5e1bc and background color to #d2cea7. Now drag out a rectangle and place it towards the top of the coaster like this.

Click on the fx button in the layers palette and add a stroke with these settings. (The color is #231f20). With the name layer still selected press ctrl F to add the noise filter with the same settings to this layer. Select the coaster layer and go to filter/texture/texturizer and use the settings below.

Now select the name layer and press ctrl F to add the same filter to it.
Select the text tool and add the type to the name plate. The font I used here is Impact. n the type layer go to the fx pallete and choose drop shadow with these settings (color #f6f5eb).

In the layers palette alt click on the drop shadow we just created and drag it to the ring layer and the active layer. Holding alt should cause the effect to be duplicated so that you can add it to these layers. You can also right click, copy the layer style and paste it into these layers.

Now select the burn tool and use one of your favorite grunge brushes.Set the range to midtones and the exposure to 25%. Select the coaster layer and brush across it until you have reached a good looking result like this

Now do the same to the name layer

Last select the coaster layer and go to fx in the layers pallette one last time and add a drop shadow to the coaster with these settings(color #000000).

Grab a nice wood texture, or whatever you would like to place it on and add it below everything. There you have it. I hope this tutorial was useful and I hope you have fun with the effect

You are a beast! Thanks for this. I have a few large rusty barrels I could use some custom stickers like this to add to them.
